Whole Week Overview

Overview:

This week students will learn about making inferences through a variety of guided practice and independent activities based on photos and short passages. They will also learn how to structure and write responses to inference-based questions.

Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.1/4.1/5.1

Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

Resources:

  • Teacher Guide
  • Daily Powerpoints with Teacher Notes
  • Printable Passages, Notes, Activities, Warm Ups, and Exit Tickets
  • Short Standards-Focused Assessment

Day 1 - Introduction

Launch

Activate students’ prior knowledge of inferences.

Core Instruction

Using the guided notes and handouts, teacher will define inference and explain the components of a strong inference.

Guided Practice

Students will use the guided notes to generate inferences about pictures as a class. Exit tickets and checks for understanding are built into the PowerPoint as well.

Day 2 - Whole Class Practice

Launch

Students will make an inference based on a photo.

Core Instruction

Using the guided notes and handouts, teacher will explain the difference between showing a telling in writing. The teacher will explain why good writers let their readers infer a lot.

Guided Practice

Annotate the provided passage as a class and begin making inferences about a character.

Partner Practice

Students will work in pairs to read a new passage, annotate, and make inferences about characters. Exit tickets and checks for understanding are built into the PowerPoint as well.

Day 3 - Inference Statements

Launch

Students will make an inference based on a photo and support that inference with a key detail.

Core Instruction

Using the guided notes and handouts, teacher will explain the key components of an evidence-based inference statement.

Guided Practice

Students will annotate the provided passage as a class and draft a supported inference statement.

Independent Practice

Students will independently read a new passage, annotate, and craft a supported inference statement. Exit tickets and checks for understanding are built into the PowerPoint as well.

Day 4 - Group Practice

Launch

Students will make an inference based on multiple photo and support that inference with a key detail.

Guided Practice

Students will craft supported inference statements based on multiple pictures.

Independent Practice

Students will independently read a new passage, annotate, and craft a supported inference statement. Exit tickets and checks for understanding are built into the PowerPoint as well.

Day 5 - Assessment

The Assessment

Hand out the assessment for students and then go over the directions:

  • Read the passage carefully.
  • Answer the inference questions.
  • Write an inference statement about the passage.

Students will also be asked to apply what they’ve learned to images.
